The Problem with Purpose

the problem with purpose

The journey to find your purpose can feel confusing, intimidating and full of twists and turns. Oftentimes there is a lot of weight attached to it, especially in the spiritual community. And not knowing yours can make you feel lost, frustrated and even hopeless.

I want you to know from my heart to yours that if you haven’t found your purpose yet, that’s totally okay! You are certainly not alone and there is nothing wrong with you.

I believe ‘purpose’ is a loaded word that so many people get tied up in knots about (and I say this from personal experience!). In truth, your purpose can be much more simple and straightforward than you think.

I remember stumbling upon a quote from my therapist who wrote something poignant about this topic before we even began working together, “What if your purpose was to show up fully for the experience that you’re having?”

Her words shook me out of my predetermined ideas about purpose. She helped me realize that it doesn’t need to be this one, lifelong mission that you must be dedicated to your whole life.

Redefining Purpose

In fact, what if your purpose is as simple and easy as being your authentic self?

That would mean that ‘living your purpose’ is no longer wrapped up in doing. You could be drinking a mug of tea, washing the dishes, or relaxing by the pool and you would be living your purpose- just by being you.

Purpose is a state of being, not a state of doing. You don’t need to buy more coaching sessions, make more money, attend more trainings or do more things to be ‘on purpose.’

So instead of despairing and getting caught up in that familiar thought loop that you feel lost and that you don’t know your purpose and that you need to find it, try a reframe. Repeat the mantra to yourself, “I am on purpose.”

That affirmation sends out a message to the Universe that will allow you to attract more opportunities and bigger ways for you to be on purpose.

I also like to start out each morning with a prayer, asking God/Source/Universe to allow me to be of service, to be an instrument of His divine will. And to embody love in all that I say, do and think. From this place of intention, it’s easy to see that things happen for me rather than to me.

Waking Up to Your Wholeness

You came into this world with unique, innate gifts. This is not a ‘just add water’ situation. You were born perfect and fully formed. There is nothing you have to hone, discover, find or seek out. Everything you could want is already inside of you.

Simply show up as yourself. Radiate the fullness of your presence. That is your purpose. That is your gift. And doesn’t that feel good? It takes that heavy pressure off, doesn’t it?

It gives you permission to play, explore and delight in discovering more about yourself and what pleases you each day. The whole world benefits when you shine your light.

You don’t need to become more, heal more, or get out and get more. You came here to express your one-of-a-kind perspective and share your inner riches.

Above all, your purpose in this lifetime is to be your authentic self. There is no destination you need to reach, nothing you have to fix.

You are already complete. You are the one you’ve been looking for.
