House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1): A Review

By April 4, 2023Book Reviews
House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

I will preface this by admitting that I’m not typically a fan of urban fantasy. One of the reasons I adore fantasy is the sheer escapism of it and urban fantasy is often darker, grittier and more reminiscent of real life than I tend to prefer. But when one of your favorite authors dabbles in the sub-genre, you’re willing to making an exception. So even though House of Earth and Blood is leagues apart in tone from the enchanting, romantic, fairytale vibes (with teeth!) that is ACOTAR, I’ve gotta say… I was blown away yet again. Sarah J. Maas is a wizard with words and no matter the topic or story, she absolutely slays.

House of Earth and Blood is highly distinct with complex world-building and an unbelievable array of magical creatures- from archangels, to merpeople and everything in between. This book takes a little time to warm up and get going, but once it does, you’ll be hanging on to every word. It also happens to be wonderfully twist-tastic, and has many of the amazing elements from Maas’s other books that I’ve come to know and love: steamy romance (although this one is more slow-burn), a kickass female lead, crisp and snarky dialogue, and plenty of heartfelt moments mixed with uninhibited, passionate angst.

I think what surprised me most about HOEAB is that it’s essentially an action-packed murder mystery wrapped in dazzlingly edgy, supernatural packaging. Once I came to that delightful realization, I was able to sit back, relax and break out the chocolate croissants. House of Earth and Blood exceeded all of my expectations and what makes me even more excited is the insane ending and potential for juicy sequels! There are so many mesmerizing characters, unexplored continents and elaborate politics, you can tell that Maas has only just scratched the surface. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one. House of Sky and Breath here I come!
